The Spartan (or alternately, the Spartan Monument) is a monument located on the island of Stratis in the Republic of Altis and Stratis.
Overview[]
The Spartan is located in the southern half of Stratis. Its titular monument was built to honour the sacrifices of the conscripts who fought for the British Empire during the Second World War.[1]
In mid-July 2035[2], the monument was temporarily turned into an outpost for the AAF. An air defence battery was also stationed here but was eventually destroyed when anti-government guerillas from the mainland infiltrated the outpost and sabotaged it.[3]
Etymology[]
The monument's inscription, "molon labe" (Altian: μολὼν λαβέ / ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ), translates to "come and take them" in English.
History[]
As a subject of the British Empire, hundreds of Altian soldiers from across the colony were forced to partake in the Operation Torch landings in North Africa on November 8th, 1942.[1][4]
Most were killed in the initial landings and many more would die from their wounds, unable to return home and resulting in the loss of almost an entire generation. As such, they have been dubbed as the so-called "lost generation" of Altis' history, a bitter reminder of the nation's cruel exploitation and oppression at the hands of the British.[4]
Trivia[]
- The Spartan is notably featured in both The East Wind[3] and the Night showcase[5]. In both scenarios, it serves as one of the possible targets for the player to sabotage.
