« Find and rescue citizens of a flooded town.
Mission Description
»

There Will Be Flood is the final mission of ArmA 2's Silver Lion campaign.

Diary[]

« Bystrica was hit by heavy rain and was partly flooded. Our unit was called in to help. We tried to save many. Some of them were grateful, while others were not. Eventually there were so few of us, we had to pilot the boat alone, but luckily we had helicopter support. »

Overview[]

The player controls an unnamed BYSFOR peacekeeper. Heavy rains and storms have hit Bystrica hard and settlements throughout the province have become inundated. With BYSFOR's manpower stretched thin, the peacekeeper must rescue the civilians in this city by himself.

Role/class:

  • Infantry / Rifleman

Default loadout:

  • Primary weapon: None
  • Secondary weapon: None
  • Equipment: None
  • Backpack: Czech Vest Pouch

There are no alternate pieces of equipment to choose from.

Objectives[]

Primary[]

  • (1) Rescue civilians
  • (2) Transport to a safe location

Optional[]

  • (3) Check the building
  • (4) Catch the thief

Mandatory[]

  • The soldier must survive
  • The boat cannot be capsized
  • Do not leave the city

Walkthrough[]

Primary 1: Rescue civilians[]

Hop into the boat parked in front of you. Start up the motor and begin sailing through the flooded city.

Civilians will randomly spawn on the rooftops of buildings or will be trapped in the water and waving/shouting for help. To rescue a survivor, stop the boat near their location or within 50 metres of them. The screen will fade to black and the civilian will hop onto your boat as a passenger who can now be brought back to shore at your starting location (see Primary objective below).

Pay close attention to your map and observe "zones" that are highlighted in deep blue in contrast to the lighter toned ones. Survivors will only be found in the deep blue areas, so don't waste time checking areas which you've already gone through. Lastly, although the counter initially begins with a requirement of twelve survivors, you actually have to save fifteen in total. The counter will steadily increase until you locate the extra three.

When all survivors have been rescued, the mission and campaign will be finished.

Primary 2: Transport to a safe location[]

Take back any passengers you save to the starting location. Remember to take it easy on the accelerator or you'll end up beaching yourself by accident.

Optional 3: Check the building[]

The general hospital on the eastern side of the city has two survivors trapped on the first floor of the structure. You'll have to get out of the boat and start swimming for this one; use the side entrances as the front has a bus obstructing it.

However, the ground floor stairwell is blocked by rubble and can't be climbed to access it. Don't waste time swimming through the ground floor; skip straight to the ladder next to the side entrance (to the east) and climb it. After you reach the top you'll be on the second floor. Go down the stairs to the first floor and check the rooms.

There should be two survivors in one of the rooms. Select the action prompt when it appears and the survivor will be brought straight back to your boat.

Optional 4: Catch the thief[]

You may randomly run into looters on the western side of the city near the "island" with cows and other livestock. You'll have to disembark from the boat to catch them. Chase them down and once you're close enough (or they get stuck in the water), select the Catch action prompt and they'll be brought back to your boat automatically.

They are considered to be survivors so you only have to "rescue" them and bring them back to your starting location.

Tips[]

  • The vehicle turbo key (Default hotkey: Left Shift) comes in handy since you'll be forced to cover a lot of ground. Take it easy on corners though, as it's very easy to lose control when making sharp turns and potentially capsize yourself.
  • Some walls like the corrugated metal fences can be freely bypassed. Don't try this with the thicker stone walls however - those will block your boat and cause it to take damage at high speeds.
  • Your boat is limited to a maximum of three survivors per trip. Save yourself an extra two trips by rescuing three civilians at a time rather than ferrying each of them individually.
  • When going after the survivors at the hospital make sure you have enough room for at least two passengers, otherwise the second survivor won't be able to get on and you'll have to go back for them later.

Trivia[]

  • The fog becomes extremely thick if you attempt to stray too far from the city.
  • Contrary to your soldier's musing about having access to air transportation, the initial helicopter that flies past the city will not help you evacuate survivors.
  • Amusingly, the script which handles spawning survivors may often place them in strange locations. This often occurs when there is more than one civilian being spawned on the same rooftop, resulting in one of the two (or three) survivors standing on water.
  • Captured looters are treated as regular civilian survivors which can lead to hilariously inconsistent dialogue whereupon the "thieves" will praise the soldier for his help and ask him if he saw their daughter, neighbour or wife.
  • This is the one of the few missions in the campaign where the player controls an unnamed Czech soldier (using their default profile) rather than Sergeant Kouba or another named story character.
  • There Will Be Flood is the first and only official mission in ArmA 2 that makes use of the "pond" objects introduced with the Army of the Czech Republic DLC to simulate the flooding effect.
