The USS Freedom (CVN-83) is an aircraft carrier utilised by NATO's naval forces in ArmA 3. It was added with the release of the Jets DLC.

Overview[]

  • Role:
    • Seagoing forward airbase
« The USS Freedom is the second ship of its class. Carrying hull designation CVN-83, this nuclear-powered aircraft carrier serves as a main operating base for NATO. The USS Freedom can carry various aircraft and helicopters on board that can facilitate almost every support role. With a length of 337 meters and width of 105 meters, this is the largest ship ever built.

The lead ship of the U.S. Navy's 6th Fleet and Carrier Strike Group 14, the USS Freedom aircraft carrier is a preeminent asset for the maintenance of maritime superiority.[1][2]

Accompanied by its destroyer escort, the USS Liberty, the Freedom represents NATO's power projection capabilities across the globe.[1]

It is capable of housing an entire carrier air wing composed of F/A-181 Black Wasp II stealth fighters, Sentinel stealth UCAVs, and other ground support craft such as UH-80 Ghost Hawks and even the V-44X Blackfish family of VTOLs transports/gunships.[3]

The USS Freedom supports catapult-assisted takeoffs and tailhook landings and features fully functional autonomous defensive weapon systems that are scattered throughout various positions on the ship. Unlike the systems featured on its destroyer escort, these static heavy anti-air systems are intended to protect the Freedom from enemy aircraft.[1][2]

NOTE: The USS Freedom is a static in-game object that can be positioned at any location on a terrain via the Eden editor but cannot be 'driven' like a true ship.

Defensive systems[]

The USS Freedom supports a total of seven defensive turret emplacements arranged at specific spots throughout the carrier:[4]

It should be noted that although the portside midship position is unused by default, it is sufficiently large enough to support a single Praetorian 1C turret.

Trivia[]

  • The Freedom is based on the real-life "Gerald R. Ford"-class of supercarriers being constructed by Newport News Shipbuilding to replace the U.S. Navy's aging fleet of "Nimitz"-class aircraft carriers.[1]
    • The first ship of its class, the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78), was commissioned for service as of 2017. The Freedom's hull designation (CVN-83) implies that it is the sixth of the ten planned Ford-class carriers.[2]
    • Co-incidentally, the ship name Freedom is also currently used in real-life by the lead ship of the "Freedom-class Littoral Combat Ship", which is also designated as the USS Freedom (LCS-1).
  • The Freedom's automated anti-aircraft systems (the Praetorian, Centurion, and the Spartan, respectively) are based on the real-life "Phalanx CIWS", "Mk 29 Guided Missile Launching System", and "Mk 31 Guided Missile Weapon System" defensive systems mounted on real U.S. Navy carriers and armed vessels.
    • The Centurion fires "RIM-162 ESSM" missiles, while the Spartan uses "RIM-116 RAM" missiles instead. Both are real-world surface-to-air missiles used by the Mk 29 GMLS and Mk31 GMWS launchers.
  • The interior is not modelled and cannot be used to store additional aircraft or munitions. Likewise, the upper sections of the carrier's island cannot be accessed. Only a briefing room and a few corridors which lead straight back to the flight deck can be entered.
  • Unlike the USS Khe Sanh (LHD-9) that was featured in ArmA 2, the USS Freedom is the first full-size aircraft carrier in the entire series.
