Armed Assault Wiki

This article lists the specifications for underbarrel grenade launcher rounds featured on certain weapon platforms in ArmA: Cold War Assault (previously known as Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis).

Overview[]

Underbarrel grenade launchers are weapon attachments which support being loaded with either (lethal) anti-personnel/anti-light vehicle high-explosive (HE) grenades or less-than-lethal (LTL) illumination/signalling flares. They are exclusively mounted onto the underbarrel position of assault rifles.

To access a UGL, simply toggle the fire mode key (Default hotkey: Spacebar) and cycle through "modes" until the UGL (M203/GP-25) is selected. Adjusting the trajectory of the UGL grenade rounds is handled the same way as looking at the weapon's ironsights.

UGL ammunition is available in the form of individual grenade "magazines". They are universally shared by all faction UGLs with no side restriction. For instance, a Soviet AK-74 GL can freely load the same grenades used by an American M16A2 GL.

List of weapons with UGLs attached[]

Only three weapon platforms feature UGLs as sub-variants:

Grenade types[]

UGLs can load five types of grenade "magazines". HE grenade rounds occupy two primary weapon inventory slots while flares only require one to carry:

Type Base damage value Launch velocity (m/s)
High-Explosive 20 60
Flare 5 80
  • High-Explosive (HE): Effective against clustered infantry and unarmoured/lightly armoured ground vehicles. Has a blast radius of 7 metres.
  • Flare: Illumination/signalling round. Burns until the flare reaches the ground or makes contact with a hard surface.

Flare shells are available in either white, green, red or yellow colour varieties. There are no performance differences between the colours.

Rifle grenades[]

Rifle grenades, alternately dubbed as "mortars", function distinctly in a different way from UGLs. Rather than being fired through an underbarrel launcher, rifle grenades are fired via the weapon's muzzle.

Only two weapons feature the ability to load rifle grenades:

(*) Note that the UGL-equipped M16A2 variant CANNOT be loaded with rifle grenades.

Damage type Base damage value Launch velocity (m/s)
High-Explosive 50 70

Unlike UGLs, rifle grenades do not feature separate flare "magazines" and are exclusively anti-personnel only. They retain the benefit of being more powerful and longer ranged compared to UGL rounds, being effective up to a maximum distance of 450 metres depending on the user's elevation and angle of launch. They also have a wider blast radius of 10 metres as opposed to 7 metres.

Switching to rifle grenades is handled in the same way; once a rifle grenade "magazine" is loaded, simply toggle the "fire mode" and adjust aim with the weapon's sights. Each "magazine" carried will occupy up to two primary weapon magazine slots.

Trivia[]

  • Cold War Assault's usage of universal grenade "magazines" for all faction UGLs would not make a return to the series until ArmA 3.
  • To date, rifle grenades are exclusively featured as a mechanic in Cold War Assault only.
    • Although ArmA 3's Global Mobilization - Cold War Germany DLC features rifle grenades for the G3 battle rifle, it is a semi-official Creator DLC and doesn't count as an official comeback of the mechanic.
