The Vybor airport is a military airbase located in South Zagoria, Chernarus.

Overview[]

Located in the northern province of South Zagoria, this former Soviet military installation was constructed in the aftermath of the Second World War. It was originally intended to be used just for parachute training but was gradually expanded over the course of several years into a full-sized airbase.[1]

Following Chernarus' independence from the Soviet Union, control of the airport was taken over by the Chernarussian Defence Forces (CDF). It supports the majority of fixed- and rotary-wing aviation assets used for conducting counterinsurgency operations and border patrol duties. However, due to the lack of funding and insufficient maintenance, many of the facilities are run down and are poorly secured.[1]

After the civil war's resolution, command of the airport's garrison was assigned to Captain Mitrovica of the CDF.[2][3]

History[]

At the height of the 2009 September Crisis, Vybor was abandoned by government troops after pro-Russian separatists from the so-called "Chernarussian Movement of the Red Star" (ChDKZ) overran the province after initiating their second uprising.[4]

Vybor would remain under ChDKZ control for almost a month until government forces, with the backing of U.S. Marines from the 27th Marine Expeditionary Unit (27th MEU), assisted in the liberation of the province as part of Operation Harvest Red.[4]

On October 17th, Chernarussian troops and U.S. Marines would be forced to withdraw to pre-Operation Harvest Red lines under diplomatic pressure from the Russian government.[4] Peacekeepers from the 454th Guards Motor-Rifle Regiment would proceed to assume control of airport and stage their assets at Vybor to monitor the uneasy ceasefire.[5][6]

However, they would later withdraw from Vybor (and Chernarus) after their peacekeeping mandate is unanimously revoked by the UN Security Council on October 19th[4], paving the way for Chernarussian forces to reclaim control of the airport.[7][8]

ARMEX tradeshow cancelled (2010)

Post-September Crisis, the airport was extensively used by Non-Government Organisations (NGO) to bring humanitarian aid supplies into the country.[2] In early November 2010, the Canadian conglomerate, Vrana Corp, had planned to host one of its ARMEX tradeshows at the airport.[9]

It was cancelled after mass anti-war demonstrations were organised against the exhibition. However, Vrana's representatives have confirmed that they intend to return sometime in 2011 to host another show; on the condition that the country's situation improves.[9]

Trivia[]

  • The airport is prominently featured in the final mission of the main campaign. The player(s) can choose to attack and succeed in capturing Vybor from the Russians, though this will culminate in one of the worst endings to the campaign.
    • It is also featured as one of the first "towns" to capture in the Bear Rising showcase scenario, though the mission is obviously non-canon.
