Watches are portable timepieces used to keep track of the time and date.

In Cold War Assault, the Watch is not classified as a "wearable" item as the Watch is always available to both soldiers and civilians alike. The Watch has hand indicators for hour, minute, and seconds. A small window is also located on the right side, showing the day of the week and current day of the month.

By default, pressing the WATCH keybind (Default hotkey: T) will bring up the player's Watch on their screen. The Watch will also be visible on the Map as an interactive display element. Clicking and holding will allow the user to drag the Watch around the Map. Double-clicking onto the Watch will enlarge it instead, allow the player to see its hands and the calendar more clearly.

The Watch is not affected by lighting conditions and will always be clearly visible even in complete darkness.

In Armed Assault, the Watch is once again available by default to all solders and civilians (it is not classified as a "wearable" item).

The Watch's default keybind in Armed Assault is now swapped to O (as opposed to T). It is also now possible to have the Watch be toggled to display permanently on the player's screen by double tapping the keybind (Default hotkey: 2×O).

In terms of functionality, little has changed with Armed Assault's Watch. Aside from its appearance, dedicated hands for hour, minute, and seconds are still displayed, as is a window for a calendar. Likewise, the Watch will always be shown on the Map if it is brought up, and it can be freely enlarged for better clarity. The only difference with the calendar is that it specifically only shows the day of the month (day of the week is no longer displayed).

In ArmA 2, the Watch is no longer an innate "ability" available to all soldiers and personnel. Instead, the Watch is now classified as a standalone item that needs to be worn in order to read the time (it will not be possible to tell the time without a Watch equipped).[A2CfgW 1][A2CfgW 2]

Another difference with ArmA 2's Watch is visibility; unlike in Armed Assault, it no longer remains fully visible at all times of the day and its dial is affected by ambient lighting. Fortunately, even though the dial will become darkened under low-light conditions, its markers for seconds, the minute track, hands, and the window of the calendar, are all fully illuminated. They will glow faintly in green, thereby allowing the player(s) to still read the time in spite of poor lighting conditions.

Aside from these specific differences, the Watch remains aesthetically unchanged from its predecessor in Armed Assault and shares the exact same lug, case, and strap. Bringing up the Watch (Default hotkey: O) or having it toggled to permanently display on the player's screen (Default hotkey: 2×O) also stays unchanged.

Trivia[]

  • Watches featured throughout the ARMA series are based on various real-world designs:
    • In Cold War Assault, the Watch is based on the "Diver" series of wristwatches made by the Japan-based company, Seiko Group Corporation. However, it specifically uses a blue and red-coloured "Pepsi"-style bezel from a different model number (the "6309-729A").[1]
    • Armed Assault and ArmA 2's iteration of the Watch is modelled after the "490", a milspec wristwatch made by the American company Stocker & Yale.[2]
    • In ArmA 3, its version of the Watch is based on a Swiss-made wristwatch: the "B-42 Marinemaster" designed by Fortis Watches AG.[3]
    • Reforger's Watches are based on three designs: the Stocker & Yale "184A" (for the U.S. military)[4], Vostok Watch's "Komandirskie" (for the Soviet Ground Forces)[5], and PRIM's "Orlík 38" (for the FIA).[6]

  3. Mořický, K 2024, Arma 3 returned back to civilian model - Fortis B-42 Marinemaster. I couldn't find any info why this particular piece was selected, but I suspect it may have something to do with Arma 3’s post-apo RPG origins. In real life it was discontinued because tritium in its night markings was found to be uncomfortably more radioactive than expected.
