The Wheeled UGV is a drone unit in ArmA: Mobile Ops.

Overview[]

  • Role:
    • Combat support vehicle
« Fully automatic and AI controlled, this wheeled drone is equipped with a machine gun and medium armor plating. It has more HP than soldier units and does greater damage. UGV has a greater aggro range, easily attracts enemy fire and protects infantry units.

Purpose[]

A multi-role drone, the Wheeled UGV serves as a faster but less durable counterpart to the Tracked UGV.

Strengths[]

Although the Wheeled UGV doesn't quite pack as much firepower as the Tracked UGV, their true utility lies in being able to draw fire away from infantry squads and shield them from high damage defences. Their Take Cover ability is immensely useful when activated with lots of nearby infantry, as their durability is tripled for a short time until the buff wears off.

Additionally, Wheeled UGVs are cheap to construct and are easily massable since they occupy only one slot in a Barracks. For instance, assuming that the player has upgraded at least four of their Barracks to Level 3 or higher, it is possible to deploy more than thirty Wheeled UGVs into a single battle.

Weaknesses[]

Wheeled UGVs move slower than most ground units and are bad at keeping up with fast infantry squads like the Fire Team. This almost always ends up in a situation where the squads will run ahead first, get wiped out by mines or static defences, and only after that do the Wheeled UGVs turn up moments later to get cut down by anti-vehicle defences or Heavy Team-loaded Pillboxes.

When positioned properly however, with the infantry teams deployed after the Wheeled UGVs have neutralised the initial wave of defences, then they can work more efficiently.

Usage[]

Because Wheeled UGVs don't actually have much HP and deal extremely low damage per burst (by the standards of other drones) even after multiple successive upgrades, it is simply more fuel cost/barracks space efficient to replace Wheeled UGVs with Tracked UGVs as the player advances in Office tiers.

It should also be noted that like all other drone-type units, the Wheeled UGV is unable to gain any veterancy bonuses and relies purely on upgrades researched at the Comms Centre.

Abilities[]

Take Cover[]

« The transporter vehicle can provide some cover for soldier units nearby to reduce damage they receive for 5 seconds.
Ability description
»

Upon activation, the Wheeled UGV will shield nearby infantry squads and triple their resistance against enemy fire. During this entire duration (5 seconds), the squads can take more damage than they would usually be able to survive and be able to continue fighting after the buff wears off.

However, it should also be noted that Take Cover will not prevent a buffed squad from being killed if it lacks the sufficient amount of HP to endure the attack. Therefore, it has no use when activated on a squad that has less than 25% of its HP, as it will still be annihilated before the buff times out.

Likewise, Take Cover has no effect on nearby drones and any aircraft. There is no point in activating the ability if there are no more infantry squads left alive or ready to deploy.

Trivia[]

  • Prior to Update 1.14, Wheeled UGVs did not have the ability to shield nearby units.[1]
  • The Wheeled UGV's model appears to be reused from ArmA 3's UGV Stomper drone and has simply been modified with a smaller heavy machine gun-armed turret instead.
